RETURN TO THE NATURE: CANOE EXPEDITION

7

What is it about?

We will spend three days canoeing through the Tara canyon, sleeping on the beaches along the way, making a new camp every day.
We pack everything we need and carry with us, and we leave our phones waiting for us in civilization.
Books are desirable.
We will spend one day visiting the Durmitor plateau with Zabljak, Black Lake and other sights.
We will ride along the famous Durmitor ring, ride horses on Trsa, enjoy local specialties and swim in the Black Lake at 1428m above sea level.

It's not for everyone.

But anyone can come!

No, this story is not for everyone.
If you are used to comfort, a warm shower every morning and every evening, comfortable mattresses and pillows without which you cannot sleep – this will probably be too much for you.
On the other hand, if you’re a little freer and ready to step out of your comfort zone, you don’t need any other prerequisites.
When it comes to paddling and canoeing, at low water levels at this time of year, complete amateurs can do it.
Of course, before any trip to the river with our guides, you will go through a basic paddling course that will be quite enough for this exhibition.

What is needed?

From us you get everything you need for this adventure: a dry bag for packing your belongings, a sleeping bag, a tarp or tent wing, a dry suit for the river, a canoe, a paddle, personal protective and floating equipment.
You also get basic equipment for survival in nature: a knife, flint, a match, a flashlight, a water canister.
We will also provide full food and drinks during this adventure, every meal and all drinks are included in the price.

What does this program look like?

FIRST DAY

Arrival at the campsite, check-in

You can come to the camp at any time of the day, and check-in to the rooms is from 6 pm.
All our guests have secured parking for their vehicles and free use of the pool during their stay at the campsite.
A WiFi signal is available in every corner of the campsite.
Our staff will be waiting for you at the reception, who will show you the accommodation and guide you in all the details of the program and will be at your disposal 24 hours a day. This program includes sleeping in our COMFORT rooms with private bathrooms. If you come earlier, you can use the time to enjoy the pool and the restaurant.

Dinner, socializing, presentation of the expedition

Dinner starts at 8 pm and we serve specialties of local cuisine: barbecue, goulash, meatballs, grilled trout, pies, various side dishes, salads and other modern dishes – all of which come in unlimited quantities. If you are vegan/vegetarian or have any other dietary requirements, let us know in advance and we will respect everything. After dinner, there will be socializing by the fire, and our guides will use this time to get to know you and present the expedition, its schedule and all other details.
The guides will also share with you all the necessary equipment that you will receive from us that you will carry with you during the expedition, and teach you how to pack as economically as possible for this trip.

SECOND DAY

Morning, breakfast

Breakfast starts at 7.30 am and for breakfast we serve homemade eggs, fried bacon and sausages, Gatak cream, cheese from Durmitor, honey collected on the slopes of the Tara canyon, Herzegovinian and Njeguš prosciutto, homemade bacon and sausages, doughnuts, homemade bread… Of course, we also have a light version for those who like cereals, butter, homemade cherry and strawberry spreads, etc.

Durmitor, Žabljak, Black Lake... Montenegrin Dolomites

After breakfast, we pack our already prepared things in the car and set off on a journey! Today is scheduled for a tour of Durmitor and Žabljak, horse riding on Trsa, a tour and enjoyment on the Black Lake (1428 m above sea level) where it is possible to swim, rent kayaks or small boats and sail on the lake. An educational walk around the lake and a tour of Tito’s cave in the immediate vicinity are planned.
I also plan to visit numerous viewpoints and landmarks on the massifs of Piva Mountain, Zabljak and the Tara Canyon.

If you wish, we can also organize hiking to Bobotov kuk and Škrčka jezera, but know that this requires good physical fitness and additional time planning. During the day, there will be a few short recreational hiking tours on the Durmitor plateau.

Lunch was organized in one of the beautiful ethnic restaurants on Žabljak during the trip.

In the evening, we arrive at the rural household La Nostra Casa in Zabljak, where the hosts will wait for us with a traditional Montenegrin dinner and homemade wine.

Dinner and a second night are planned here.

THIRD DAY

Canoe expedition, Šljivansko - Radovan Luka

After breakfast in the beautiful ambience of a rural household, we head to Šljivanski, the place from where we set off on a canoe expedition. Along the way, we will visit the famous bridge on Đurđevića Tara where we will take a short break for photography or zipline if you are interested. Next is the final packing of the equipment in dry bags and canoes and we start with the activities on the river!
To begin with, with a guide, you will go through the basic instructions for paddling and behavior on the river in order to have the safest possible descent, and after that we will go down Tara. After a few kilometers, we come across the river Ljutica, which flows into the Tara from the left side, and which is said to be the shortest and strongest river in Europe. It springs literally from the rock under a strong and large stream and thunderously ends its course in Tara after a few tens of meters.
Not long after, we pass under the imposing bridge on Đurđevića Tari, which we have just crossed, but this time we look at it from a different perspective.
A few kilometers after that, at Žugić port, we come to a point of no return, i.e. to the very entrance to the canyon where all contact with civilization ends.
This is followed by easy rapids and encounters with numerous springs, waterfalls and springs, the most famous of which are the Black and White Springs located on the right side of the river. We will also pass through Lazov kamen, the place is the canyon of Tara the narrowest, only 3m, and where the river is deepest. During the descent down the river, we will also take a short break for a meal.
Our goal is to cross about twenty kilometers by water on the first day on the river and make the first camp in the immediate vicinity of the Radovan port, but still far enough from it.
There is a motel on Radovan Harbor, which can serve as a security exit point in case of some unforeseen circumstances.

The first night in nature, setting up camp

When we carefully choose the place where we will spend the first night, we agree to the beach and start preparing a temporary camp. The guides will explain to you how to make the most of the equipment you have borrowed and taken with you, i.e. how to make a tent or shelter for that night out of a tarp or tent wing with the help of what you find in nature. Together we will form the main camp and the fireplace and at dusk and sunset we will indulge in the magic and peace of the canyon. You can spend the afternoon meditating and enjoying the ambience, fishing, reading a book, etc. The guides who will be with you will prepare food in a natural and authentic way and with dinner we will enter the night under the stars.

FOURTH DAY

Canoe expedition, Radovan Luka - Brštanovica

Waking up in nature, deep in the Tara canyon, with the chirping of birds and the sound of the river is something that not many people have experienced and few have the privilege to do so. Well, that’s how your morning will begin, with a slight exercise of soul and body with coffee or tea.
We will make the most of the morning for enjoyment and breakfast, after which we pack up our temporary camp and move on our way. On this day we pass through the deepest part of the canyon and there are already serious beeches waiting for us under the village called Tepca, and then the continuation of natural wonders in the canyon. This day we will spend most of our time on the river because we will spend most of our time on interesting places along the way.
The highlight of the day will be a visit to Bajlović’s dripstones, beautiful waterfalls that fall into Tara from a height of some 30m on the right side of Tara, making unrealistically beautiful walls of water along the way. The waterfalls are huge and all together they are about fifty meters long.
What is especially interesting, will be the opportunity to pass behind those walls of water and enter a completely different world of nature.
We will also go on an easy hiking tour above the waterfall, following the stream from which they are formed that will take us to a cave where there is a lake. It sounds unreal, but it really is! And the cave hides some of its secrets that we will reveal to you on the spot. After visiting the waterfall on Bajlovića dripstones, we continue on and on one of the beautiful beaches we will take a break for lunch in the authentic ambience of the canyon. Furthermore, we come across the collision of two canyons, i.e. the place where the canyon of the small river Sušica flows into the canyon of Tara, as well as countless beautiful beaches and waterfalls along the way. At the very end of the trip for that day, we will visit another dripstone with an extremely high waterfall that is hidden in the forest, just a few minutes walk from the river.

A second night in nature, making a camp

As in the previous evening, there is a well-coordinated sequence of events and we form a new camp for that evening on the selected beach. Since we are now experienced campers, the knowledge gained the previous day will be useful to us in the rapid formation of the camp.

Our guides often like to say that they are in fact cooks who use boats only as a means of transport to get to work 🙂 They will take care of the food tonight and with these delicacies we will enter the night.

FIFTH DAY

Canoe expedition, Brštanovica - Bastasi

Waking up, coffee, breakfast, you already know 🙂 After packing the camp, we set off on the last route, the last part of the canyon that carries the most excitement. Since you have been working with our guides and rowing for the past two days, there is no doubt that you will be ready for the rowing challenges that are located on this last section from the second camp to our camp. On this part of the road, the Tara has the largest drop in its course, and there are also the largest and most demanding bouquets. On the last 15 kilometers, there are over 30 class 2 and 3 rapids, and you should know that the World Rafting Championships in 2009 and 2022 were also held on this section. You will have the opportunity completely independently, and with the supervision and security of our guides, to go through all those mythical noises that you have heard about – Borove, Ćelije, Mladički, Vjernojeviće, Kapije, Milutnov kamen, Čegrla, Paferšte… These rapids will challenge you in a special way and ask you to show the best of yourself, the best you know in order to beat them, and believe me, they will reward you with a sensational feeling of happiness, satisfaction and success when you pass them.
This is also the most popular destination for rafting, so it is possible that during the descent we will meet other rafters on the river, even though it is October. During this day we take a couple of breaks to rest and take pictures and in the afternoon we arrive at our campsite, from where we set off on this trip.

Return to civilization

A warm and prepared lunch awaits us at the campsite, where we will summarize the previous trip and collect all our impressions with veal under the honeycomb and a glass of conversation.
